10 Steps to recover Corrupt Microsoft Word Document
No doubt there are billions of computer users are familiar with Microsoft word and use this editor to write anything what they want and create the documents and many other things that can be done by the Microsoft Word. But as all other applications can corrupt, crash and the data present on it may lost, the same can be occurred with the Microsoft Word too. There are many reasons that cause the corruption of the word document and when you try to open your word document, Microsoft Word will reject opening the file and displays several kinds of error messages as per the reason of corruption. But there are some steps that can help you recover corrupted word document by yourself.
Step 1 - First be assure that the document is corrupted or not. Many times there are problems in another computer application that blocks the word documents to open and if those applications are removed or their process is killed then the word document will open. Alternatively you should copy your word document to USB drive and try to open the file to another computer to check if there is also the same problem or not. If the document opens then there are some other programs that cause this problem.
Step 2 - Always first make a backup of the word document so that even if the corruption occurs which leads towards serious problems that need OS reinstallation then there the backup will help you.
Step 3 - Check email as you can get the document which is not opening or being corrupted from your email if you have earlier send of receive that message in which the document was attached.
Step 4 - Run CHKDSK as this command will help you checking the disk problems and repair the disk problems. This command tests the integrity of the file system. If there are some problems then again un the Chkdsk with "/F" parameter to fix the erros that it finds.
Step 5 - If you are able to open the file then save the file in alternative format. Sometimes using a format like RTF or TXT will cause some or more words codes to be stripped from the document and fixes the problem.
 
Step 6 - Extract the raw text - When the word is able to open the file then make a backup but when it is not possible then you have to use their alternative application like any other editor that can support word documents too.
Step 7 - In Word XP and later versions, there is an option to open and Repair by which the word will try to repair and recover the data in the word document
Step 8 - You can use word to text converter as this will convert word file into the text format and then you will at least have a text file that contains all the data present on the word file. Now make a new word file, paste all text data from the text document to the new Microsoft Word file and store It on your system. If everything is fine then delete the file corrupt word document.
Step 9 - Rebuild header of the file - All the word documents that are created by a common version of word contain same headers. Overwriting the existing header will fix the problem if the error was present in the header.
